These people and resources have been instrumental in my development as an educator. They inspire me in my work!
At the heart of my educational philosophy is supporting students in growing their metacognition. I do this through opportunities for intentional reflection. The Habits of Mind are one way to emphasize lifelong learning by focusing on transferrable behaviors.
I began using the Modern Classrooms Project (MCP) framework in 2020 and never looked back! By using a blended learning approach, my students could self-pace their learning, and I could truly differentiate to meet every single student's needs. The results were incredible! For many years, I mentored teachers who were learning their model through the MCP Virtual Mentorship Program. I am a featured teacher in Robert Barnett's book, Meet Every Learner's Needs (2024).
I love the immediate student engagement that happens by setting the stage with an inquiry driven, authentic problem. With PBL, students understand the real-world purpose of their learning.
Great resources to dig into the understanding and implementation of UdL.
Not only is this book beautifully written, Muhammad shares an equity framework for approaching curriculum design. I appreciate her positive focus on celebrating every student's identity and genius.
Often when place-based learning is mentioned, people immediately think environment or outdoor education. I appreciate Anderson's inclusion of tangible place-based social studies learning, focused on history and civics.
This is truly a must-read for all middle school educators (new and veteran)! Balme eloquently explains why middle school years are turbulent and invites educators to use this knowledge to embrace and guide adolescents through these years by designing developmentally appropriate learning experiences.
In this book, Tucker and Novak get right to it by opening each chapter with encouragement to make a shift (the "why") and then providing multiple on ramps and great templates for teachers to try out the approach in their classroom.
This book pushed me to deeply examine my own diversity and grapple with social justice inequities in education.
Seif takes backwards planning to the modern day in this book by putting forth a four-phase instructional framework to foster transferable, lifelong learning for students.
The real learning happens during the journey, not by completing an end product. Storyboarding curriculum reminds me of the joy in the learning story. It's fun for me to create storyboards for my courses and when supporting teachers to get creative and clear about the purpose of their class.
